Our aims and objectives

We aim to be the North East regional focus for teaching/training, information, research and consultancy in engineering for a sustainable future.

Research in sustainable engineering & development, sustainability, and environment is carried out in many locations in the University. Those centres focussing specifically on researching these issues include:

  • The Engineerng Design Centre, and
  • The Institute for Research on Environment & Sustainability

There is a wide variety of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University that include elements of Sustainability.

We highlight the courses that have a significant sustainability theme, i.e. those which address environmental, economic and social issues. More detailed lists of relevant courses are available:

Since July 2004, the sustainability@newcastle group has engaged the local community to help spread sustainability education and awareness. This has included:

  • Schools and colleges
  • Business and industry
  • The wider community

Green Campus

Universities around the world are realising the need to integrate sustainability into all their activities. This includes campus housekeeping and the traditional core functions of teaching, research and outreach to the wider community.

The Green Campus pages highlight what Newcastle University is doing to make itself more sustainable.
