Design research & sustainability
The Engineering Design Centre (EDC) is a research centre for collaborative research between industry, local authorities and the academic sector. Associated with the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials (CEAM), we specialise in:
- the design, development and performance of systems for the production and operation of complex products, which are made on an engineer-to-order basis with high levels of customisation, and
- the investigation and analysis of more sustainable uses of energy in both the commercial and public sector.

The EDC has an enviable position in all areas of research activities from conceptual blue-sky ideas to practical implementations designed to improve productivity and alleviate design costs.

sustainability@newcastle is based in the Newcastle Engineering Design Centre (EDC) and intends to be the North East regional hub for teaching and training, information, research and consultancy in engineering for a sustainable future.

Sustainability
The Sustainability team are a multi disciplinary group who also work as part of the Energy Systems Analysis Group (with colleagues from SWAN, investigating more sustainable uses of energy with various partners in both the commercial and public sector.
Current work includes feasibility studies for sustainable energy technologies, awareness raising projects and providing evidence based information for decision making processes.

EDC background
The EDC was founded in 1990 with EPSRC funding and in the intervening years has developed a reputation for conducting leading edge research and providing usable technologies for our industrial partners.
Currently the EDC is mainly funded by industrial sponsors, a testament to the real world relevance of the EDC's work
